I disagree. BCD should be outlawed. Just let binary be binary. Aren’t we abstracted enough to not have to use BCD these days?

Similarly, Cecil the Lion was arrested by Donald Trump for bringing a dank meme to school

Real talk: If you think bringing a PCB and exposed wires with a clock to a school in this modern age is a good idea you should really rethink your perception of good ideas
Not so real talk: The Chen-Ho revolution is now!

If you’re that paranoid about exposed wiring in a junior kid grade project then that’s a personal problem.

I’m not, but with the way the world is everyone else is going to be sensitive to stuff like that.

HEY! Stop misrepresenting the luddites! Luddites did not HATE technology, they merely feared the displacement of the work force because of technology! leaving skilled craftsmen with no means to earn a living by being replaced by machinery that could be run by less skilled and therefore cheaper labor. Gees can’t a guy want to preserve his lively hood with out being accused of being a technophobe!

I’d hate to see something like that in an engineering school.

Yep, and you don’t take that stuff to the airport either unless you’ve planned time for a pull-aside and grilling.
Schools are more sensitive to that with policy restrictions for items that ‘appear’ to be dangerous and some even have wording restricting items ‘that can cause other people distress’. Add zero tolerance in some on top of that...and you’ve got the world we live in.
Is it a good system? nope...Hopefully (heh) the police/school will rejigger their policies based on the fallout to prevent going this round again and if they don’t that’s why the high level folks are elected...but until then ya gotta be savvy unless you want to be a victim or a martyr.

Schools will never drop their policies because of the insane amount of liability that comes with the task of overseeing children. The truth is that one lawsuit like this is better than an actual disaster occurring. Was it ridiculous of the teacher not to take a closer look before calling the cops? Yeah, I mean the kid is 14 and I doubt he has the know how to make an explosive, but in the end it’s a case of better safe than sorry. At least he’s getting a massive payout and a free ride to an upstanding college for his stupidity.

Wouldn’t expect them to delete the policies completely, but there’s certainly room to allow some discretion without appreciably increasing liability. Pendulum's way over on the too safe side right now, it'll come back (probably too far) as the absurdities continue to pile up.

I doubt it, if anything schools will get sued into bankruptcy and the people screaming about the harsh policies soon won’t have anywhere to educate their kid aside from private schools. The thing is any right minded person would rather have their organization torn apart financially instead of physically. I really hope the pendulum swings back though, it’d be nice to see people feeling safe.
